Local Tips

Kinnitty Castle is one of the quieter castle hotels in Ireland, which is part of its appeal. Set at the foot of the Slieve Bloom Mountains in County Offaly, it gets a fraction of the visitors that Kerry or Galway attract, and that suits it. The castle itself dates from the 19th century, built on a much earlier monastic site - the original high cross from the monastery still stands in the grounds.

The Slieve Bloom Mountains are a hidden part of the Irish midlands that most visitors don’t reach. There are marked walking and cycling trails through the range, with a circular route - the Slieve Bloom Way - covering around 77 kilometres through bog, woodland, and upland farmland. Even a short walk from the castle into the hills gives you a sense of how different this landscape is from the tourist-trail west coast.

Birr town, about 12 kilometres from Kinnitty, is worth an afternoon. It’s a Georgian estate town with a strong independent character - Birr Castle has remarkable historic telescopes and walled gardens, and the town itself has some good cafes and one of the better bookshops in the midlands. The castle gardens are genuinely special in early summer when the flowering specimens are at their best.

Lough Derg on the Shannon is about 40 minutes from the castle. The lake is the lower Shannon’s widest point and the surrounding villages - Portumna, Mountshannon, and Terryglass - are relaxed spots for an afternoon by the water. Terryglass in particular has a good pub in Paddy’s Bar that draws people from some distance.
