Local Tips

Slane village is worth a wander before or after your stay. It’s one of those tidy Meath estate villages - four Georgian houses at the crossroads, a hill rising above the river, and the ruins of Slane Castle visible from most angles. The village pub, The Conyngham Arms, is good for a pint and a decent bite.

Slane Castle itself hosts big outdoor concerts in summer - names like the Rolling Stones, U2, and Bob Dylan have all played the natural amphitheatre on the grounds. If one is on during your visit, it’s the kind of gig worth planning around, since the setting is genuinely unlike most concert venues.

The Hill of Slane offers a short walk with a rewarding view across the Boyne Valley. According to tradition, St. Patrick lit his Paschal fire here in 433 AD as a direct challenge to the High King at Tara - you can see the Hill of Tara from the top on a clear day, which puts the story in an interesting light.

The Boyne Valley is richer with ancient sites than most people realise before they arrive. Newgrange and Knowth, both a short drive from Slane, are passage tombs older than the Egyptian pyramids. Newgrange in particular is worth booking in advance - the tour into the chamber is one of those experiences that stays with you.
