Local Tips

Ashford Castle sits on the southern shore of Lough Corrib, the largest lake in the Republic, and the village of Cong is right on its doorstep. Cong is best known as the filming location for The Quiet Man (1952), and you’ll spot references to it everywhere in the village - the abbey ruins nearby are worth a short wander before or after you check in.

The drive out from Dublin takes you through the heart of Connacht. You’ll pass through Roscommon and skirt the edge of County Galway before arriving in Cong. If your driver takes the N5 west route through Castlebar and Ballinrobe, you get some decent views of the Mayo countryside in the final stretch - not a bad way to arrive.

Lough Mask and Lough Corrib fishing is serious business around here. If fly fishing is your thing, Ashford’s own ghillies can take you out on the lake. If it isn’t, the walking trails around the estate and the surrounding woodland are peaceful and easy, and the falconry school at the castle is popular with guests who want to try something a bit different.

Cong village pubs are small and local. Ashford itself is world-class, but when you want something more down-to-earth, a pint in Cong is a genuine pleasure. Pat Cohan’s Bar in the village square became famous through its Quiet Man connection and is still worth a visit.
