Local Tips

Castlemartyr sits in one of Cork’s quietest corners. The village is small and genuinely unhurried - a handful of pubs, a butcher, a church that predates the resort by several centuries. If you arrive with any energy left after the journey, a walk around the castle ruins in the hotel grounds before dinner is worth doing while the light is still good.

East Cork is food country worth exploring. The town of Midleton is about 15 minutes west of Castlemartyr and it’s the home of the Jameson Distillery, which does excellent tours. The English Market in Cork city is an hour’s drive but absolutely worth the trip if you have a free afternoon - it’s been trading since 1788 and the variety is extraordinary.

The coast is closer than you’d think. Ballycotton, a small fishing village with a lighthouse and some of the best seafood chowder in Munster, is around 10 minutes from the resort. The cliff walk there is easy going and the views back over the bay are genuinely lovely on a clear day.

A word on timing your arrival. The N8 and M8 motorway corridor from Dublin is comfortable driving, but Friday afternoons heading south can slow around the Cork city ring road. If you’re travelling on a Friday, your driver will know the alternatives - just let them factor in extra buffer time when you book.
