Local Tips

Newtownmountkennedy sits at the northern edge of the Wicklow Mountains National Park, and the countryside around it opens up quickly once you leave the main road. The Wicklow Way long-distance trail passes within a couple of kilometres of the village - you can pick it up at Roundwood to the west if you want a taste of the upland landscape without committing to a long route.

Kilmacanogue and the Avoca Handweavers shop at the old Kilmacanogue site are a short drive north on the N11. The Avoca cafe there has built a loyal following for its baking, and the shop has been selling Irish textiles since the 1970s. It’s a convenient stop if you’re passing through on the way to or from Dublin.

The village of Roundwood, about 10 kilometres west, is a good base for exploring the Wicklow uplands. At roughly 238 metres above sea level it’s one of Ireland’s highest villages, and the drive from Newtownmountkennedy up through the hills is a pleasant way to spend an hour. The Roundwood Inn dates to the 17th century and is worth a stop for lunch.

Powerscourt Estate and Waterfall are both within 20 minutes of Newtownmountkennedy by car. The estate gardens are open daily and the waterfall - at 121 metres Ireland’s highest - is separately signposted about four kilometres from the main estate. Both are worth the short drive if you have a free half-day.
