Local Tips

Shandon Hotel and Spa is in Dunfanaghy on the north Donegal coast. The town sits on the edge of Sheephaven Bay, with the broad sandy beach at Marble Hill a short walk away and Horn Head - one of Donegal’s most dramatic headlands - just a few kilometres to the north. It’s a long way from Dublin, which is exactly the point.

The three-hour journey runs north through the midlands and into Donegal. Your chauffeur heads up through Monaghan or Tyrone depending on the route, before dropping down into Donegal through the Barnesmore Gap or along the coast. The 15-minute service stop along the way is a welcome break on a longer run - worth using to stretch your legs and grab a coffee.

Charge your devices before you land. Mobile chargers are provided in the vehicle, which is handy on a three-hour run - particularly if you’re trying to coordinate accommodation, check in online, or let family know you’ve arrived safely. The WiFi on board keeps you connected throughout.

Dunfanaghy gets busy in July and August. The village is small and popular with Irish holidaymakers who book years in advance. If you’re arriving in peak summer, plan your meals and any activities ahead - the village has a few good restaurants but they fill up fast in the evenings.
