The approach to Newcastle sets the mood well before you reach the resort. Driving south from Dublin, the route takes you through County Down’s drumlin landscape - that distinctive pattern of small rounded hills left behind by the last Ice Age - before the Mourne Mountains come into view on the horizon. By the time you reach the town, you’ll have a clear sense of where you’ve landed.
Slieve Donard Resort faces the sea, and Newcastle beach is right outside. The town sits at the edge of Dundrum Bay, with the sandy beach stretching north and the dark granite peaks of the Mournes rising straight behind the hotel. It’s a landscape that doesn’t need much explaining once you see it. The beach itself is a Blue Flag beach when conditions are right, so it’s worth a walk even if you’re only stopping briefly.
Murlough National Nature Reserve is just a few minutes down the road. It’s Ireland’s first nature reserve, run by the National Trust, and the ancient sand dune system has walking trails that wind through dunes, heathland, and along the estuary edge. The views back towards the Mournes from the reserve are some of the best in the county.
Castlewellan Forest Park is less than ten kilometres from Newcastle. The forest trail around Castlewellan Lake is very walkable, and the national arboretum there - one of the finest in Ireland - has been growing since the 1740s. It’s a good option if you want to stretch your legs after the journey without going far from the resort.
