Newcastle is the kind of town that earns its welcome before you even reach the hotel. The drive down from Dublin takes you through County Down’s rolling drumlin country and along the edge of the Mournes, so keep an eye out the window as you get closer to the coast. On a clear day, you’ll spot Slieve Donard itself - at 850 metres, it’s the highest peak in Ulster - rising up behind the resort.
The resort sits right on Newcastle’s seafront promenade. Slieve Donard Resort & Spa is a Victorian railway hotel, built in 1897, and it faces Dundrum Bay with the Mourne Mountains directly behind it. The beach at Newcastle stretches for kilometres and it’s walkable from the front door, which makes it easy to get your bearings before you’ve even unpacked.
Murlough National Nature Reserve is about ten minutes south of town. It’s Ireland’s first nature reserve, managed by the National Trust, and the dunes and woodland trails there are genuinely worth an hour of your time. If you’d rather stay in Newcastle, the town has a good few cafes and restaurants along the main street.
Tollymore Forest Park is another easy one to add to your list. It’s about five kilometres from Newcastle and runs along the Shimna River, with stone bridges and old arboretum trails. Game of Thrones fans will already know it - several scenes were filmed there in the early series.
