Dublin Shore Excursion, Live Guided Open-top, Hop-on Hop-off Sightseeing Tour

About This Tour

If your ship is docked in Dublin for the day and you want to cover the city properly without committing to a fixed route, the red open-top hop-on hop-off buses are a solid way to do it. You get unlimited access for 24 or 48 hours, with 25 stops positioned near all the major attractions across the city.

Buses pass through every 20 to 30 minutes, so if you linger somewhere - and you will, Dublin’s hard to rush - you’re not standing around long before the next one arrives. The Red Route has a live guide on board, which makes a real difference if you want to ask questions or get recommendations as you go. Recorded commentary is available in eight languages across the network, covering German, Russian, Japanese, Cantonese, and English, among others.

Depending on which ticket tier you choose, you might also get a free guided walking tour, one free child per adult, and access to a guided panoramic night tour. It’s worth reading through the options when you’re booking to see which extras come with which tier.

Local Tips

The open top is worth it on almost any day. Dublin weather gets a bad press, but the city is genuinely beautiful from the top deck - the Georgian streetscapes, the Liffey bridges, the views up toward the Dublin Mountains. Bring a light layer and sit up top if you can.

Plan your first hop-off before you board. The 25 stops cover a lot of ground, from Trinity College and St Stephen’s Green in the south to Glasnevin Cemetery and the Phoenix Park in the north. If you only have a few hours, pick two or three neighbourhoods and go deep rather than trying to tick every stop.

Kilmainham Gaol is one of the most emotionally powerful stops on the route. It’s where the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising were executed, and the tour inside is genuinely moving. Book the internal tour in advance - it sells out, especially in summer.

The night tour is a different experience entirely. Dublin lit up along the Liffey and around the Georgian squares is quieter and more atmospheric than the daytime city. If you’re on a 48-hour ticket and your schedule allows, it’s well worth doing.

If you’re coming off a cruise, check the shuttle timing from the port. Dublin Port is walkable to the city centre in about 20 minutes, but the bus stops right near the quays, so you can pick it up almost immediately. Ask at the port information desk if you’re not sure where the nearest stop is.
