Local Tips

Belleek Pottery is on the western edge of County Fermanagh, just across the border from County Donegal, on the banks of the River Erne. The village of Belleek itself is tiny, but the pottery has been making fine bone china here since 1857 - it’s one of Ireland’s oldest surviving potteries and the visitor centre gives you a proper look at how it’s all done.

The pottery tour shows you the full production process, from the raw materials through to the delicate hand-finishing that Belleek is known for. The pieces are recognisable for their basket-weave designs and their particular creamy glaze - if you’ve ever seen Belleek on a shelf in someone’s house and wondered where it came from, now you’ll know exactly.

Leave time for the Belleek Pottery shop, which stocks the full range including seconds and discontinued pieces that you won’t find elsewhere. If you’re buying gifts or something for yourself, this is where you’ll find the widest selection and often the best value.

The drive from Dublin takes you through Counties Cavan and Fermanagh, passing Lough Erne on the approach to Belleek. The landscape around Lower Lough Erne is particularly good - if you wanted to ask your chauffeur to take a short detour around the lough on the way back, it’s worth considering.

Lunch options in Belleek itself are limited, so either plan to eat at the pottery’s café or ask your chauffeur about options in nearby Ballyshannon, which is a short drive across the border into Donegal and has more choice. Sort this before you set off so the day runs smoothly.
