Local Tips

Downpatrick is one of the most historically significant towns in Ireland. St. Patrick is believed to be buried in the graveyard of Down Cathedral, right in the centre of town - a large granite stone marks the spot. The Saint Patrick Centre on Market Street tells the full story of the patron saint’s life and legacy, and it’s a good first stop if you’re new to the area.

County Down rewards a slower pace. The Mourne Mountains are about 30 minutes south of Downpatrick and offer some of the best hillwalking in Northern Ireland, with Slieve Donard, the highest peak, reachable in a few hours from Newcastle. The coast road from Newcastle north to Dundrum Bay has a particularly fine view of the mountains meeting the sea.

Inch Abbey, just outside Downpatrick, is a ruined Cistercian monastery set beside the River Quoile. It’s a peaceful and often quiet spot - worth 30 minutes if you’re in the area and have any interest in medieval architecture or simply want somewhere to walk without a crowd. It was also used as a filming location for Game of Thrones if that matters to you.

The drive from Dublin to Downpatrick takes roughly two hours depending on traffic. The route goes north through Belfast and down through County Down, and your chauffeur handles all of it. There’s no border paperwork required as the Common Travel Area applies to both Ireland and Northern Ireland, so you’ll cross without any formalities.
