Local Tips

Arrive with time to breathe. The drive from Dublin to Donegal takes roughly three to four hours depending on traffic and which route your driver takes. If you’re travelling in summer, build in a little extra time - the roads around Donegal town can get busy on fine days.

Lough Eske itself is worth a slow look. The castle sits on the shores of Lough Eske, surrounded by the Blue Stack Mountains. If you’ve got time before check-in, there’s a gentle lakeshore walk that takes you away from the car park and into the quieter side of the grounds.

Donegal town is only a few minutes away. The Diamond - the town’s central square - has a good selection of local pubs and restaurants. Aroma on the Diamond is popular for lunch, and McGroarty’s on Main Street is a reliable spot for an evening pint if you’re stretching your legs after the journey.

Pack for changeable weather. Donegal gets more than its share of Atlantic rain. A waterproof layer is worth keeping near the top of your bag, even in summer - the mountains catch cloud quickly and conditions can shift in an hour.
