Local Tips

Doonbeg village sits on the south Clare coast, just a few minutes from the hotel. It’s a small fishing village on the Doonbeg River estuary with a handful of pubs and a tidal harbour. Morrissey’s pub in the village is a well-known local spot that does food and is worth a visit if you want to get out of the resort for an evening.

The Cliffs of Moher are about 40 minutes north along the coast. If you’re combining this transfer with a day on the Wild Atlantic Way, the cliffs are the obvious highlight in that direction. Spanish Point and Lahinch are both closer - about 20 minutes up the road - and Lahinch in particular has a good beach and a surf school if the weather cooperates.

Loop Head Peninsula is south of Doonbeg and often skipped by visitors. It’s a long finger of land that juts out into the Atlantic at the mouth of the Shannon, with sea stacks, blow holes, and a lighthouse at the tip. The drive out and back takes about two hours and the roads are quiet - it’s a good half-day if you have a car available during your stay.

The links course at Trump International is links golf on the Atlantic coast. The course runs through the dunes above Doonbeg Bay, and the wind is a factor on most days. If golf is the reason for the trip, it’s worth checking conditions with the hotel before you arrive so you can plan tee times around the tidal weather patterns.
