Local Tips

Adare is one of those Irish villages that stops people in their tracks. The thatched cottages along Main Street, many of them built in the 19th century by the Earl of Dunraven, are well-maintained and genuinely picturesque rather than preserved for show. It’s a working village with good restaurants, a few antique shops, and a real sense that people actually live there.

The ruins around Adare are worth more time than most visitors give them. Adare Friary, the Augustinian Priory, and Desmond Castle are all within easy walking distance of the village centre, and most are freely accessible. Your driver can point you toward the best starting point before they drop you off.

If you’re heading to Adare Manor, the castle hotel sits on the banks of the River Maigue and dates to the 1830s. It hosted the 2027 Ryder Cup, and the golf course and estate grounds are significant in their own right. Letting the transfer team know you’re Adare Manor-bound means they’ll know exactly where to pull in.

The drive from Dublin takes you through the Irish midlands and then south into Limerick county - a stretch of countryside that changes character noticeably as you move through it. If you’re not in a rush, it’s worth having the conversation with your driver about whether there’s a stop on the way that might interest you.

Limerick city is only about 15 kilometres from Adare, so it’s an easy excursion if you want to see the King John’s Castle on the Shannon or explore the city’s medieval quarter. Many travellers use Adare as a base for a day or two in the wider Limerick area before moving on.
