Local Tips

Dublin Airport has two terminals, and it matters which one you’re heading to. Terminal 1 handles Aer Lingus regional, Ryanair, and most non-EU carriers. Terminal 2 is for Aer Lingus mainline, United, Delta, and several others. Check your boarding pass before you leave - getting dropped at the wrong terminal isn’t a disaster, but it adds time you might not have.

Traffic on the M1 into the airport can build quickly during peak hours, particularly on Friday afternoons and Monday mornings. If you’ve a morning flight, your driver will know whether it’s better to leave a little earlier or take an alternative route via the Port Tunnel or the R132. Don’t cut it too fine if you’re travelling in summer.

Dublin Airport’s check-in desks can have long queues during busy periods. Most airlines recommend arriving two hours before a short-haul departure and three hours for long-haul. The transfer itself is around 25 minutes, but factor in time for security, which can vary significantly depending on the terminal and time of day.

If you’re travelling from a hotel in the south city or the suburbs, the Port Tunnel is the most direct route north to the airport and bypasses the worst of the city centre traffic. Your driver will already know this, but it’s good to understand the geography if you’re trying to estimate your departure time.
