Local Tips

Dún Laoghaire is worth a walk if you’re early. The East Pier stretches nearly a kilometre into Dublin Bay, and the walk along it - past the bandstand, past the lighthouse at the end - is one of the better free things to do on Dublin’s coast. On a clear morning you can see across the bay to Howth headland. The pier is busy with locals at weekends and quiet on weekday mornings.

The town centre sits right above the port. If you have an hour to spare before boarding, the main shopping street and the surrounding laneways have coffee shops and a good bakery or two. The People’s Park, just inland from the pier, runs a farmers’ market on Sundays with food stalls and local produce.

Dún Laoghaire has strong connections to Irish literary history. James Joyce lived briefly on the seafront here, and the Martello tower at nearby Sandycove - a ten-minute walk south of the port - is now a Joyce museum. If you’ve read Ulysses, the opening scene is set there; if you haven’t, it’s still a striking spot above the sea.

The DART train connects Dún Laoghaire to Dublin city centre in about 20 minutes. If anyone in your group wants to return to Dublin independently after the cruise calls in, the DART station is a short walk from the port and runs frequently throughout the day. It’s a scenic coastal route and one of the most pleasant ways to arrive into the city.
