An Grianan Theatre Summer Camp - Week 2 (Introduction to Performance)

At An Grianan Theatre · Letterkenny, Co. Donegal

Teenagers on stage developing performance skills at a theatre camp

A week-long performance camp at one of the northwest’s best-regarded arts venues, this is for teenagers aged 13 to 18 who are curious about what it actually feels like to stand on a professional stage - whether they have ever tried theatre before or not. An Grianan Theatre runs these summer camps specifically to welcome young people who have not attended classes at the theatre previously, so no experience is needed and no audition is involved. If your teenager has been quietly interested in acting but has not yet taken the leap, this is a low-pressure, supportive setting to find out if it suits them.

What to expect

The camp runs Monday to Friday, 12pm to 3pm each day, giving participants five afternoon sessions on the stage of An Grianan Theatre in Letterkenny town. Week Two focuses on introduction to performance - the core craft of being present and alive onstage. Sessions are led by Andrea Emmett, an actress and teacher with hands-on experience in both performing and education.

Participants work through stage presence, performance techniques, and the basics of art making in a real professional theatre environment. The approach is practical rather than academic - you learn by doing, trying things out, making mistakes in a space where that is the whole point. The camp is part of The Viewing Project, a cross-border arts initiative supported by PEACEPLUS and the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB), which reflects An Grianan’s commitment to bringing arts participation to as wide a range of young people as possible.

Spaces are limited, so early booking is worthwhile. The sign-up process includes a brief question about performance experience - this is to help the facilitators, not to filter anyone out.

Getting there

Letterkenny sits on the N56 and N13 routes and is well connected to the rest of Donegal and to Derry city, which is roughly 35 minutes by road to the east. Bus Eireann operates services from Dublin, Sligo, and Derry into Letterkenny Bus Station, from which the town centre is a short walk. An Grianan Theatre is centrally located in the town and street parking is available nearby, with a public car park within easy walking distance.

While you’re in Letterkenny

The camp runs afternoons only, leaving mornings free to explore the town - Letterkenny is Donegal’s largest town and has good cafes, shops, and access to Lough Swilly and the wider county within a short drive. There is more to see in Letterkenny and across Co. Donegal.
