Donegal Golf Nines - Bundoran Golf Club

At Bundoran Golf Club · Sea Road, Bundoran, Co. Donegal

Junior golfers competing at Bundoran Golf Club

What to Expect

Golf Nines is a national junior team competition run by Golf Ireland for its affiliated clubs, and Bundoran Golf Club hosts a leg of it on its own links on Sunday 9 August. Teams of six players aged 13 to 18 compete in Scotch Foursomes, a format where partners alternate hitting the same ball rather than playing their own, which rewards steady course management over individual scoring more than a standard strokeplay event does. Each team must field a minimum of two players of either gender, and players must hold a WHS Handicap Index between 20.0 and 54.0, so the format is aimed squarely at developing junior golfers rather than a county’s strongest juniors. The competition runs to roughly three hours from first tee-off. Events like this are part of Golf Ireland’s push to grow junior interclub golf through shorter, team-based formats that are quicker to play and easier for clubs to field mixed squads for than a traditional 18-hole open. The WHS Handicap Index band set for entry means the competition is aimed at club-level junior golfers rather than scratch or near-scratch players, so it doubles as a development event as much as a competitive one, with clubs from across Donegal and neighbouring counties expected to send teams to compete on Bundoran’s links.
