At Iontas Art Gallery · Conabury, Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan
For the past twenty years, a group of Castleblayney’s older residents has been meeting every Wednesday in Iontas to paint, and this exhibition gathers the results. Green Door Art Group grew out of the town’s 55’s Club and a 2005 Positive Age art programme for senior citizens, and its anniversary show fills the Iontas Art Gallery with work from more than 40 local artists, many of whom picked up a brush for the first time in the group. The show is in its final weeks, running until Monday, 10 August 2026.
The gallery is hung with paintings across every medium and subject the members have tried, from portraits to landscapes to still life, reflecting two decades of a group that still meets twice a week, one class in the morning and one in the evening, every Wednesday at Iontas. Many contributors had never painted before joining, and the show is presented as much as an open invitation as a retrospective, with the group keen to recruit new members regardless of age or experience. It began life meeting in St Mary’s Hospital in Castleblayney, taking its name from the green door beside the hospital’s on-site church, before moving into Iontas, which it now calls home. The exhibition launched on Friday, 29 May 2026 and has been open to the public through the summer.
Iontas is in Conabury, on the edge of Castleblayney town centre, with parking on site and level access throughout the building.
Iontas is also home to the town’s theatre programme and a busy community centre, so it is worth combining a gallery visit with a look at what else is on. There is more to see in Castleblayney and across Co. Monaghan.
