Listowel Rambling House

Kerry Writers’ Museum hosts a Listowel Rambling House on the last Thursday of every month, reviving a form of entertainment that predates radio and television in rural Ireland. Before electrification, neighbours would “ramble” from their own fire to a house known for good company, where the night’s entertainment was whatever songs, stories, recitations and dances the gathered crowd could produce between them. The museum’s modern version keeps that same informal, participatory shape rather than staging a scripted show, with the next sitting on Thursday, 27 August 2026.

What to expect

A rambling house runs on contributions from whoever is in the room: a song from one corner, a recitation or a bit of local history from another, a step of set dancing if there is room to clear a floor. It sits naturally inside a museum built around Kerry’s storytelling and literary tradition, connecting the county’s famous writers, John B. Keane and Bryan MacMahon among them, back to the ordinary fireside entertainment their work often drew on.
