At Matt the Millers · 1 John Street, Kilkenny, Co. Kilkenny
Monday is the busiest night of the week at Matt the Millers, a four-floor bar and restaurant on John Street overlooking the River Nore and Kilkenny Castle. Branded on the venue’s own listings as #MondaysAtMatts, the night runs in three stages: traditional Irish music from 6pm, followed by After Dark, described by the venue as one of the best party bands on the Irish music scene, and finishing with a DJ set from DJ Eddie Hughes carrying the night into the late bar.
The format is built to move rather than sit still: trad music opens the evening for the earlier crowd, After Dark’s live set picks the pace up through the middle of the night, and DJ Eddie Hughes takes over once the band finishes to keep the dance floor going. Matt the Millers markets itself around this rotation, with four separate bar levels and space to dance under a disco ball on the ground floor, so the room can fill and empty across different areas as the night progresses. The venue also runs live trad and contemporary music Sunday through Thursday more generally, but Monday is the one night with the full three-part lineup and its own branding.
Matt the Millers is at 1 John Street, in the heart of Kilkenny city centre, a short walk from the train and bus stations and from Parliament Street. There is no dedicated car park; the city centre’s pay-and-display car parks are the nearest option.
John Street sits at the centre of Kilkenny’s pub and restaurant strip, right by the castle and river, so a Monday here fits naturally around dinner nearby. There is more to see in Kilkenny and across Co. Kilkenny.
