At Larne Museum and Arts Centre · 2 Victoria Road, Larne, Co. Antrim BT40 1RN
On the 4th of July 2026 - the 250th anniversary of American independence - Larne Museum is marking the occasion with something more personal than a parade: a free guided walk through the streets of the town, tracing the real stories of the people who left these shores for the New World. It is a local history event with genuine depth, suitable for anyone with an interest in emigration, Ulster Scots heritage, or the human side of transatlantic history.
Local guide Robert Stewart leads the walk, visiting historic sites around Larne town centre that connect directly to the town’s long relationship with America. Larne was one of the key departure points for Ulster Scots emigrants over several centuries, and the walk brings that history off the page and onto the streets where it happened. After the walk, participants return to Larne Museum for light refreshments and the formal launch of a new online interactive StoryMap - a free digital resource documenting the connections between Larne and America that will remain accessible after the event.
The museum itself is worth a moment of attention: it occupies the former Carnegie Free Library, built in 1905 with funding from Andrew Carnegie, the Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist. That a building funded by one of America’s great immigrant success stories now houses a walk about emigration to America is fitting.
Places are limited and must be booked in advance - this is not a drop-in event.
Larne is on the east Antrim coast, roughly 30 kilometres north of Belfast. By rail, the Belfast to Larne line runs to Larne Town station, which is a short walk from the museum at 2 Victoria Road. By road, the A8 from Belfast is the main route. Parking is available in the town centre.
The town sits at the mouth of Larne Lough and is the gateway to the Antrim coast road. A visit to the heritage walk pairs well with a drive north toward the Glens of Antrim afterwards. There is more to see in Larne and across Co. Antrim.
