The Thomond Archaeological and Historical Society holds its next public lecture on Monday, 21 September 2026, when Dr Catherine Swift speaks on “The Ancient Religion of the Island of Saints: Bishop Charles Graves of Limerick and the Early Irish Church”. The talk runs at Mary Immaculate College in Limerick city and is open to the public as well as society members. TAHS has run an autumn-to-spring lecture programme for years, pairing academic speakers with a general audience interested in the archaeology and history of Limerick and the wider Thomond region.
Lectures are held on Monday evenings in Room T.1.17 of the Tara Building at Mary Immaculate College, starting at 8pm. Dr Swift’s September talk looks at Bishop Charles Graves, the 19th-century Church of Ireland bishop of Limerick and antiquarian scholar known for his work on early Irish Christian sites and ogham inscriptions. The society follows this with a second confirmed lecture on Monday, 19 October 2026, when Dr Padraig Lenihan speaks on “Enemies Within: the Other Siege of Limerick, May to October 1651”, covering the lesser-known internal conflicts during the Cromwellian siege of the city. Outside its lecture season, TAHS also organises day and half-day outings to archaeological and historical sites around Limerick and neighbouring counties, each led by a member with a particular interest in that location. New attendees do not need to book ahead for a lecture.
Mary Immaculate College is on the South Circular Road, a short walk or bus ride from Limerick city centre. Limited campus parking is available in the evenings, and several public car parks are within walking distance.
