At Various venues across County Monaghan · County Monaghan
Every August, the Heritage Council turns the whole island into an open house for nine days. In County Monaghan that means local historians, naturalists, archaeologists and community groups opening doors, leading walks and giving talks that rarely happen at any other time of year. The 2026 theme is “Heritage at Risk” - an invitation to look more carefully at old buildings under threat, vanishing crafts, disappearing habitats, and the stories that go with them. If you have any curiosity about the county’s past or its landscape, this is the week to act on it.
Heritage Week has grown from a handful of events in 2005 to well over two thousand across Ireland annually, attended by nearly half a million people. Most are free. In Monaghan, past years have brought guided walks of historic streetscapes, talks on the county’s complicated plantation history, nature days focused on the drumlin landscape and its lakes, and open days at sites not normally accessible to the public. The 2026 programme also incorporates Wild Child Day and Water Heritage Day as dedicated strands, so families with children and anyone interested in the natural environment will find relevant events alongside the historical talks.
The full Monaghan listings for 2026 are released closer to the date at heritageweek.ie/event-listings. Monaghan County Council’s Heritage Office and the Monaghan Heritage Forum (Facebook: @MonaghanHeritageForum) post local updates as they are confirmed. Some events require advance booking through the individual organiser; others are simply turn-up-on-the-day.

The county packs a lot into a small space - Georgian market towns, a string of drumlin lakes popular with anglers and walkers, and a strong tradition of storytelling and music that Heritage Week tends to draw out into the open. There is more to see in Monaghan and across Co. Monaghan.
