The Whiskey Trail

About This Experience

The Whiskey Trail is built on a straightforward idea: you can’t truly understand Irish whiskey without understanding the city that made it famous. Led by Grainne and her team of local guides, this three-hour walking tour takes you through Dublin’s streets and into three carefully chosen whiskey bars where the story behind each dram matters just as much as the liquid in the glass.

At each stop, you taste a different style of Irish whiskey - single malt, single pot still, and blended - paired with local food that draws out flavours you wouldn’t expect to find together. The guides are proper storytellers, weaving together the history of each distillery, the character of each pub, and the broader tale of how whiskey shaped Dublin’s culture. Between tastings, you walk through historic streets and tucked-away corners that most visitors never stumble across.

What sets this apart is the personal touch. Group sizes are kept small, the guides know the bartenders by name, and the bars are chosen for their character rather than their convenience. This is a genuine introduction to Irish whiskey from people who care deeply about both the spirit and the city it comes from.

Good to Know

The tour lasts around 3 hours with walking between stops - you’ll cover roughly 2 km on foot, so wear comfortable shoes. Open to over-18s only. Group sizes are kept small for a more personal experience. The meeting point is in Dublin city centre - you’ll get the exact location when you book.

Local Tips

Eat something before you go. Three proper whiskey tastings with food pairings are more than generous, but arriving on an empty stomach isn’t the best idea if you want to get the most out of the flavour conversation. A light lunch or an early bite sets you up well and means you can focus on what’s in the glass rather than how long until the next snack.

Ask your guide about the difference between pot still and single malt. It’s the question most people have but don’t always ask, and the answer tells you a huge amount about why Irish whiskey tastes the way it does. The use of unmalted barley in pot still production is a genuinely Irish quirk - Grainne and the team love explaining it.

Take notes on your phone if you find a whiskey you love. It sounds a bit nerdy but you’ll thank yourself later. There are dedicated whiskey shops in Dublin city centre - Celtic Whiskey Shop on Dawson Street is the standout one - where you can pick up a bottle to bring home if something really clicks during the tasting.

Give Temple Bar a proper chance. The area gets a bad reputation among locals for being touristy, and some of it is deserved, but the streets around it still carry real character if you know what you’re looking at. Your guide will likely point out details you’d walk right past on your own - the old guild hall facades, the medieval street layout, the things that survived centuries of change.
