Local Tips

Dundalk is the largest town in County Louth, right on the edge of the Cooley Peninsula. The town itself has a solid mix of places to eat and drink, and it’s a sensible base if you’re planning to spend time on the Cooley or cross the border into South Armagh. The Square and the surrounding streets are where most of the action concentrates.

The Cooley Peninsula is worth a morning or afternoon. Carlingford Lough runs along its southern shore, and the medieval town of Carlingford - about 20 minutes from Dundalk - has one of the better-preserved Norman castles in the country, along with a lively food and oyster scene. The Tain Trail walking route takes in the whole peninsula and has good signage for shorter sections.

Proleek Dolmen is an easy detour. Located on the outskirts of Dundalk near the Ballymascanlon Hotel, this Neolithic portal tomb has a capstone estimated at 40 tonnes. It’s accessible year-round and takes about 20 minutes there and back from the road. Worth the stop if you’re curious about Ireland’s prehistoric sites.

The border is close. Dundalk sits about 8 km from the Northern Ireland border, and Newry is a straightforward drive from town. If you’re travelling between the two jurisdictions, the road is seamless - no checkpoints - and the area around the border has its own distinct character worth seeing.
