Local Tips

Carlingford is one of those towns that rewards slow arrival. The medieval streets are narrow and the lough is right there - arriving by private car means you’re dropped at your door rather than walking from a bus stop with your bags. Take a moment once you’re in to walk down to the water before dinner.

The journey from Dublin Airport takes about an hour in normal traffic. The M1 north is usually clear except during Dublin city rush hours. If you’re landing in the late afternoon on a weekday, there can be some slowdown around the city, but once you’re past Drogheda the road opens up and the rest of the drive is easy.

Carlingford itself is small, which is part of the appeal. There are a handful of very good restaurants - it has a stronger food scene than you’d expect for a village of its size - and some traditional pubs on the main street. The town gets busy on summer weekends when visitors come from Dublin and Belfast, so if you’re planning to eat out, booking ahead is sensible.

Luggage and the lough. If you’re planning any water-based activities on the lough - kayaking or sailing are popular - you won’t need much gear that isn’t available locally. Travel light and you’ll have more flexibility once you’re there.
