Local Tips

The Wicklow coast sits right on your doorstep once you arrive. The town of Wicklow itself is a working harbour town at the mouth of the Vartry River, with the ruins of a Black Castle perched on a headland above the sea. It’s a good base for the whole east coast of Wicklow, which gets markedly quieter the further south you go from Dublin.

Wicklow is the gateway county for the Garden of Ireland. The N11 corridor from Dublin passes through rolling agricultural land before the Wicklow Mountains National Park takes over to the west. You’ll catch glimpses of the Sugar Loaf on the approach, and on clear days the whole Dublin Bay coastline opens up behind you as you come over the hill south of the city.

The timing of your transfer matters more than you might think. The N11 out of Dublin carries heavy commuter traffic on weekday mornings and evenings. If your flight lands in the morning rush (before 9am) or you’re departing Wicklow in late afternoon, allow a little extra buffer. Your chauffeur knows the road and will account for this, but it’s worth keeping in mind when planning the rest of your day.

Wicklow town is well placed for further exploring. Glendalough is about 30 minutes inland by road, the Wicklow Way long-distance walking trail passes through the mountains just to the west, and Brittas Bay’s sandy beach is a short drive south. If you’re heading to a hotel or self-catering property outside the town centre, give the operator the full address at booking so there’s no confusion on arrival.
