Local Tips

The Glendalough valley is one of the most dramatic settings in Wicklow. The hotel sits at the edge of the valley, with the famous monastic ruins and twin lakes a short walk from the front door. If you arrive in the afternoon and the weather is clear, it’s worth stretching your legs around the lower lake before dinner - the light in that valley is something in the late afternoon.

The drive from Dublin Airport takes around an hour. Your chauffeur heads south through the city or bypasses it via the M50, then south on the N11 before turning inland through the Wicklow Mountains. The last stretch through the Sally Gap or via Laragh is genuinely scenic, so don’t fall asleep.

Luggage space is the key thing to plan for. The E220 is a comfortable executive saloon with capacity for 2 standard cases plus 2 smaller bags. If you’re a group of three with larger cases, let the operator know at booking so they can advise on fit.

Glendalough gets busy at weekends and bank holidays. If your visit falls in summer, the monastic site draws large day-trip crowds by mid-morning. Staying at the hotel gives you the advantage of being there early and late, when it’s quietest and at its best.
