Loughcrew is about an hour northwest of Dublin, near the town of Oldcastle in County Meath. The drive out is pleasant - the N3 through Navan is straightforward, and once you’re past Kells the landscape gets noticeably quieter and more open. You’re heading into the ancient heartland of Ireland here, and it feels it.
The Loughcrew Cairns are some of the oldest structures in the country - passage tombs dating back around 5,500 years, older than Newgrange. The gardens and the hilltop cairns are managed separately, so it’s worth knowing before you visit which you’re heading to. The gardens themselves are beautiful in spring and summer, with formal herbaceous borders and a long walled garden. The cairns on Slieve na Calliagh require a short uphill walk and are accessed by collecting a key from the estate office.
If you’re visiting for the equinox or a sunrise, book this transfer well in advance. Loughcrew’s Cairn T is one of the few passage tombs aligned to the rising equinox sun, and it draws visitors from across Ireland for those few days in March and September.
Oldcastle is the nearest town for supplies - a small, unpretentious place with a supermarket and a couple of decent pubs. If you’re staying in the area overnight, the surrounding Meath countryside has some good guesthouses and there are pleasant walks around Lough Sheelin a short drive to the northwest.
