Local Tips

Markree Castle sits in Collooney, County Sligo, roughly two hours northwest of Dublin on the N4. The route is mostly motorway as far as Longford, then a straightforward run up through Roscommon and into Sligo - genuinely one of the nicer drives in the country once the fields open up past Carrick-on-Shannon.

Markree is Ireland’s oldest inhabited castle, and it’s been a hotel since the 1980s. The estate covers several hundred acres of parkland along the Unshin River, and the dining room is well regarded locally - worth booking a table for your first evening if you’re arriving for a special occasion.

Collooney is just a few minutes from Sligo town if you want to pick up anything on arrival - there’s a good farmers’ market in Sligo on Saturdays and the town centre has everything you’d need. The castle is close enough to use Sligo as a base for day trips without needing to drive far.

County Sligo is seriously good walking country. Knocknarea mountain, with the cairn of Queen Maeve on its summit, is a straight shot from Collooney and takes about two hours return. Strandhill beach is nearby too - a surfing village with a popular seaweed bath house that’s worth an afternoon even if the Atlantic swell isn’t your thing.

Nearby on IrelandMe

  • Knocknarea - A flat-topped limestone mountain above Strandhill topped by a massive cairn reputedly holding the grave of the legendary Queen Maeve.
  • Strandhill - A compact surf village on the edge of Sligo Bay with a long beach, a seaweed spa, and some of the best hot food in the county.
  • Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery - One of the largest collections of megalithic monuments in Ireland, spread across open fields just outside Sligo town.
