Local Tips

Mount Druid is an eco-camping and glamping site in the Westmeath countryside near Streamstown, between Mullingar and Athlone. The site is deliberately off-grid in character, with tree houses, dome tents, and woodland camping set in a wooded demesne away from main roads. It’s the kind of place that rewards arriving with as little agenda as possible, which is why having a chauffeur handle the drive from Dublin makes sense - you can decompress on the road and arrive ready to slow down.

The N4 from Dublin to Westmeath is one of the country’s most straightforward cross-country routes. The motorway takes you through the Kildare and Meath borders before the landscape opens into the flat, lake-scattered midlands around Mullingar. The last stretch to Mount Druid leaves the main road and winds through minor country roads lined with hedgerows and pasture - a very different atmosphere from the airport you left an hour earlier.

Westmeath’s lake district surrounds the Mount Druid area. Lough Ennell is a few kilometres to the southeast, Lough Owel is to the north, and the River Brosna flows through the land between the lakes. The area is good for slow mornings on the water, and Mount Druid’s own grounds have enough walking to fill a day without leaving the site. Athlone, with its castle, river, and independent restaurant scene, is about 30 minutes by road if you want a town day out.

Arriving without a car at a rural camping site is more practical than it sounds. Mount Druid is set up for guests who want to stay put and enjoy the site rather than drive around, and most of the on-site activities don’t require a vehicle. If you plan to explore further afield - Clonmacnoise to the south, or the Athlone area - a local taxi or hired car works for day trips, or you can book a return chauffeur for specific days. The site team can advise on local options when you arrive.
