The drive to Delphi Resort is one of the best road journeys in Ireland, and you’re not driving. The route west from Dublin takes you through County Galway and then into Connemara, where the landscape shifts dramatically - bogs, black lakes, and the Twelve Bens mountain range filling the horizon as you head for the Delphi valley. By the time you arrive, you’ll already feel like you’ve arrived somewhere genuinely remote, even though you’re only 3.5 hours from the airport.
Delphi Resort sits in the Bundorragha valley between the Mweelrea Mountains and the Sheefry Hills. The river running through the valley is one of the better salmon rivers in Connacht. The resort runs its own activity programme including kayaking, rock climbing, and zip-lining, so it’s worth looking at what’s on before you arrive if you want to plan your first day.
Killary Harbour is a few kilometres from the resort. It’s Ireland’s only fjord, stretching 16 kilometres inland from the Atlantic and surrounded by mountains on both sides. Boat trips run on the fjord in season, and the walk along the southern shore road gives you good views without needing any special gear.
Westport is about 35 kilometres to the north. It’s one of the most pleasant towns in Connacht - a planned Georgian town built around the Mall river, with good restaurants and traditional music pubs. Croagh Patrick, the conical mountain visible for miles around, is a short drive from town and you can walk to the summit in around 2.5 hours if you’re up for it.
