Dublin: River Liffey Sightseeing Cruise

About This Tour

Dublin looks different from the water. Streets you’ve walked a dozen times suddenly make more sense when you can see how the river connects them, and buildings you barely noticed from the quays reveal their full scale when you’re floating past. This 45-minute cruise on the River Liffey is short, affordable, and gives you a genuinely fresh perspective on the city.

The boat takes you through the centre of Dublin, passing under bridges that span centuries of engineering and design. The Ha’penny Bridge - its ornate ironwork a Dublin landmark since 1816 - is one of the highlights. So is the sweeping harp-shaped Samuel Beckett Bridge, and Gandon’s masterpiece the Custom House, which looks far more impressive from the river than from the road. The live commentary traces Dublin’s relationship with the Liffey from the Viking settlement over a thousand years ago, through the Georgian building boom, the industrial decline, and the modern redevelopment of the docklands.

The vessel carries up to 48 passengers and is fully covered, so the cruise runs in all weather. There’s outdoor deck space for when the sun cooperates. The boat runs on HVO fuel, which cuts emissions significantly compared to standard diesel. At EUR21 per person, it’s one of the best-value things to do in Dublin and fits easily into a gap between other plans.

Local Tips

Grab a seat on the outdoor deck if the weather’s cooperating. The views from inside are perfectly fine, but the Ha’penny Bridge and the Custom House look their best when you’re out in the open with nothing between you and the skyline. Dublin’s weather is unpredictable, so take the deck when you can.

The Samuel Beckett Bridge is worth watching out for. It was designed by Santiago Calatrava to resemble an Irish harp lying on its side, and it’s one of the more striking pieces of contemporary architecture in the city. The live commentary will point it out, but it helps to know it’s coming so you can look at the full shape as you approach.

This is a great first thing to do on your first day in Dublin. The commentary covers the city’s history from the Vikings to the present in a way that sets the scene nicely. You’ll get your bearings on the geography of the city and know what you’re looking at when you’re back walking the quays later.

The docklands section toward the end of the cruise gives you a good look at how much the city has changed in the last few decades. The contrast between the Georgian Custom House and the glass-and-steel tech-company offices just beyond it tells you something real about modern Dublin.
