Gaelic Games are Ireland’s national sports - UNESCO-recognised, over 3,000 years old, and still the heartbeat of communities right across the country. This 3-hour session puts you inside that world. Not as a spectator watching from the stands, but as a player on the pitch.
You’ll play Gaelic Football, Hurling, and Handball at Na Fianna GAA Club in Glasnevin, a real working club about 10 minutes from Dublin city centre. The trainers are passionate about their games and genuinely love introducing them to visitors. It’s a mix of sport, culture, and good craic, and it works for all ages and abilities - you don’t need to be fit, fast, or coordinated to have a great time.
The session opens with a proper introduction: where these games came from, what they mean to Irish people, and why they’ve endured for so long. Think elements of soccer, rugby, basketball, volleyball, golf, hockey, lacrosse, and baseball all woven into one - and you’ll start to get the picture, though nothing quite prepares you for picking up a hurley for the first time.
All you need are flat shoes and a willingness to get stuck in.
The session runs for 3 hours at Na Fianna GAA Club, St Mobhi Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9. You’ll start inside the dedicated visitor centre with an introduction to the history of Gaelic Games and their place in Irish life. Then it’s outside for team activities in Gaelic Football, Hurling, and Handball - most groups end up playing mini-matches, which is where the fun really starts. Water, tea, and coffee are available on site. Dressing rooms and showers are available if you bring your own towels and toiletries.
Meeting point: Na Fianna GAA Club, St Mobhi Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9. When you enter the clubhouse, head upstairs to the Experience Gaelic Games Visitor Centre. Bus routes 4, 9, and 155 stop directly across the road.
Don’t overthink the hurling. Most people grip the hurley too tightly and swing too hard. Watch how your trainer does it - the wrist action is everything, and once it clicks, you’ll understand why hurling is considered one of the fastest field sports in the world.
Arrive in whatever you’d wear for a walk in the park. Flat shoes are genuinely all you need. The club provides the equipment, and the trainers have seen every level of ability imaginable. Nobody is expecting you to show up like a county player.
The history session is worth paying attention to. The GAA was founded in 1884 and was as much a cultural and political movement as a sporting one. Your trainer will touch on this, and it adds real depth to the games you’re about to play - especially hurling, which predates written Irish history.
Glasnevin itself is worth an hour of your time afterwards. The National Botanic Gardens are a short walk from the club, and Glasnevin Cemetery - where many of the figures from Irish revolutionary history are buried - is just up the road. It’s a neighbourhood that repays exploring.
Book ahead if you’re travelling in summer. This experience has a 5.0 rating with over 100 reviews and fills up quickly during the tourist season. Midweek sessions tend to have smaller groups, which means more time with the trainers.
