From Dublin: 6-Day All of Ireland Rail Tour

About

Six days, six counties, and most of Ireland’s headline attractions - all connected by train and coach, with two nights each in Killarney, Galway, and Dublin so you’re not packing and moving every day. This is a proper sweep of the island, north and south, with enough time in each place to actually get your bearings.

Day 1 - Check in at Dublin Heuston Station Customer Service Desk for the 07:00 InterCity train to Cork, with breakfast available to buy on board. The day covers Blarney Castle and the Queenstown Story at Cobh Heritage Centre, then an evening train to Killarney where you’ll stay for two nights B&B with en-suite facilities.

Day 2 - Departing Killarney at 10:00 for the Ring of Kerry. The day takes in some of Ireland’s most spectacular mountain and coastal scenery: Dingle Bay, the Macgillycuddy Reeks, Carrantuohill (Ireland’s highest mountain at 1,038 metres), Moll’s Gap, Ladies View, and the Lakes of Killarney. Back to Killarney for a second night.

Day 3 - A 07:30 transfer from Killarney to Limerick, joining the Cliffs of Moher tour. The day covers Bunratty Castle, the Cliffs of Moher, and Galway Bay before you check into a 3-star Galway city hotel for two nights.

Day 4 - Ferry to Inis Mór, the largest of the Aran Islands. After lunch in Kilronan, you tour the ancient fort of Dun Aengus, perched above dramatic cliff-edge seascapes on the island’s Atlantic coast.

Day 5 - Departing Galway at 10:00 for a tour of Connemara including Kylemore Abbey, then the train back to Dublin Heuston, arriving at 20:45. A tram transfer takes you to a 3-star Dublin hotel for two nights (room only).

Day 6 - Full Irish breakfast included. Check in at the Railtours kiosk in the main concourse of Connolly Station - look for the yellow jackets - 20 minutes before the 10:50 departure. The train arrives into Belfast Central Station at 12:58, with a short transfer to Belfast city centre where you join the Belfast Hop-On-Hop-Off tour covering the city centre, the Titanic Quarter, Falls and Shankill Roads, and the Peace Wall. Free time for shopping before returning to Dublin.

Local Tips

Killarney is your most relaxed stop. Two nights here gives you time to breathe between the busy Day 1 arrivals and the Ring of Kerry day. The town itself is well set up for visitors - good pubs, proper restaurants, and jaunting car rides along the lakeside if you want to lean into the traditional tourism experience. Gap of Dunloe is close by if you have energy on either evening.

Dun Aengus on Inis Mór is one of the genuinely extraordinary places in Ireland. The prehistoric stone fort sits on the edge of 100-metre cliffs on the Atlantic side of the island, and the view from the edge is something you’ll talk about for years. The island itself moves at a different pace to anywhere on the mainland - Aran sweaters, limestone pavements, old stone walls everywhere. Don’t rush the lunch stop in Kilronan.

The Galway to Dublin train on Day 5 is the one to watch. You’re arriving back into Dublin Heuston at 20:45, which means a tram transfer in the evening and checking in late. Grab food in Galway or at the station before you board - it’s a long stretch from the morning departure.

Belfast on Day 6 rewards curiosity. The Hop-On-Hop-Off covers Falls and Shankill Roads and the Peace Wall, which is some of the most significant street-level political history in Europe. If you have time between stops, the Titanic Museum in the Titanic Quarter is world-class, though it’s not included in the package. Cathedral Quarter for lunch or a quick pint is also worth knowing about - it’s a few minutes’ walk from Belfast Central.

Pack a small bag separately for quick access on travel days. With five hotel moves across six days, you’ll be glad you have a day bag that doesn’t need to go into the luggage hold on every coach. Passport for the Belfast day too, even though EU and UK citizens don’t formally need one for the crossing - it’s always handy to have.
