The Mourne Mountains are one of Ireland’s most dramatic landscapes, and getting around them on an electric bike changes the experience entirely. Hills that would normally require serious fitness become manageable, which means you can actually spend your energy enjoying the view rather than just surviving the climb.
Castlewellan Forest Park sits about 90 minutes from Dublin by car and 45 minutes from Belfast. You collect your Cube electric bike at the lakeside hub and head out into a mix of forest trails, ancient stone paths, and open mountain terrain. On a clear day you can see all the way across to Dublin Bay and the Wicklow Mountains - a panorama that’s worth the trip on its own.
The Mourne Mountains hold Global Geopark status, which gives you a sense of the geological and natural significance of what you’re riding through. Hire periods run from three hours for a focused outing up to multi-day adventures if you want to cover the full extent of the trail network. Helmet, lock, pump, spare tube, accessories pack, and route maps are all included, and no cycling experience is needed to make the most of the electric assist. The park is open all year round.
Start at the lakeside hub early if you can. Castlewellan Lough is beautiful in the morning light, and getting out before the weekend crowds arrive means you’ll have long stretches of trail almost entirely to yourself. The Forest Park itself is stunning even before you get on the bike.
The ancient stone paths in the park are a real highlight that a lot of visitors overlook in favour of the mountain bike trails. These routes move through older sections of the Mournes and give you a sense of the landscape that the faster trails don’t quite deliver. Worth asking the hub staff which paths are most accessible on the day you visit.
Bring layers, even in summer. The Mournes can change quickly, and even on a warm day the higher sections of the trail network can be several degrees cooler than the car park. The electric assist means you might not generate as much body heat as you’d expect on a normal bike ride.
If you’re making a day of it from Dublin, the drive down through Newry and into County Down is genuinely scenic - a good way to ease into the day before you even collect the bike. There are plenty of cafes in Castlewellan village to grab breakfast or lunch around the ride.
