Dublin: Tuft Your Own Rug Workshop

About

There’s something quietly brilliant about leaving Dublin with something you actually made yourself. This three-hour tufting workshop is built for complete beginners - no craft background needed, no artistic confidence required. The hosts guide you through every stage, from threading the tufting gun to the finishing steps of gluing and shaving that turn a worked canvas into a proper, take-home rug.

Before you show up, you send in your design idea and the team draws it onto the canvas so it’s ready and waiting when you arrive. On the day, you pick your yarn colours from a wide selection, settle into your spot, and get to work at your own pace. The hosts stay close throughout, so you’re never stuck wondering what to do next.

By the end of the session you’ve got a one-of-a-kind piece to carry home. It’s the kind of afternoon that tends to stick with you - a bit more than another round of the usual tourist circuit.

Local Tips

Send your design in as early as you can. The team needs time to draw it onto the canvas before your session, so the sooner they have it, the better the prep. A simple, bold design with clear outlines tends to translate better to tufting than something with lots of fine detail - think geometric shapes, chunky lettering, or a simple illustration rather than a photorealistic image.

Think carefully about your colour palette before you arrive. There’s a wide selection of yarn on the day, which is exciting and also a little overwhelming if you haven’t thought it through. Bringing a rough colour scheme in mind - even just a photo on your phone of something you like - saves you from spending the first twenty minutes staring at the yarn wall in a mild panic.

Wear something you don’t mind getting yarn fibres on. Tufting is a tactile process and the loose fibres do tend to travel. It’s not messy in a paint-splattered way, but your dark jacket will appreciate being left at the hotel.

The workshop is close to Dublin’s Liberties neighbourhood, which has some genuinely good spots for a post-session bite or coffee. If you’ve worked up an appetite after three hours of creative focus, you’re well placed to explore that part of the city.

This is a solid option if you’re travelling as a pair or small group and want to do something different together. The relaxed, self-paced format means everyone goes at their own speed, and comparing results at the end is half the fun.
