The National Gallery of Ireland holds one of the finest collections of Irish and European art you’ll find anywhere on the island, and most people walk through it too fast. This private tour gives you a 5-star licensed guide who knows the collection inside out and speaks your language — literally, since the tour is available in English, German, French, Italian, and Russian.
You’ll spend real time with works by Vermeer, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Jack B. Yeats, Roderic O’Conor, and William Orpen, and your guide can go deeper or lighter depending on what you want. There are four options based on how much time you have:
2 hours — A focused private tour of the permanent collection, with a reserved time slot so your group isn’t queuing around other visitors.
3 hours — The same 2-hour tour of the permanent collection, plus a round-trip transfer from your Dublin accommodation.
4 hours — A deeper visit covering the permanent collection and the current temporary exhibition, with skip-the-line access to the paid show. Enough time to also take in nearby landmarks like the Oscar Wilde House.
5 hours — The full 4-hour experience, plus a round-trip transfer from your accommodation by private car.
All options include a reserved time slot for the permanent collection and a guide who’s fluent in your chosen language.
Meeting point: Outside The Mont Hotel, 1-4 Merrion Street Lower, Dublin 2, D02 H525. Please do not enter the hotel — it’s a meeting point only.
Merrion Square is right next door and worth 20 minutes of your time. The park surrounding it is where Oscar Wilde grew up (the house is on the corner at No. 1), and the square itself is one of the best-preserved Georgian streetscapes in Europe. If you’re on a 4- or 5-hour option your guide may take you by it, but even on a shorter visit it’s a lovely way to finish.
The gallery’s cafe is a good spot for lunch. It’s on the ground floor and far less crowded than anything on Nassau Street. If you’re doing a longer option and need a break mid-visit, it’s worth knowing it’s there rather than heading outside.
The permanent collection is free to the public. This tour adds real value through the private guide, reserved time slot, and (on longer options) skip-the-line exhibition access — but if anyone in your group wants to return on their own later in the trip, they can do so without paying anything.
The Iveagh Gardens are a two-minute walk from the gallery. They’re one of Dublin’s best-kept secrets — a formal Victorian garden hidden behind high walls on Clonmel Street. Locals love them precisely because most visitors don’t find them. It’s a genuinely peaceful spot after a couple of hours indoors.
Book the language you want at checkout. The tour runs in English, German, French, Italian, and Russian, but you need to specify when booking. Don’t leave it to chance if language matters for your group.
