Inclusive Family Free Play Day - Roe Mill Park and Megaw Park 2026

At Roe Mill Park (7 Aug) and Megaw Park (14 Aug) · Megaw Park, Ballymoney, Co. Antrim BT53

Children taking part in inclusive outdoor activities at a park event

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council runs this free afternoon specifically for families with children of all abilities - a relaxed, properly set-up session where nobody has to worry about whether their child will be able to join in. The Ballymoney date takes place at Megaw Park, a town-centre green space that the council has been actively upgrading for accessibility, with a wheelchair swing, sensory planting, and dedicated drop-off bays among the improvements. If you have a child with a disability, a developmental difference, or sensory needs, this is the kind of afternoon that is built around them rather than bolted on as an afterthought.

What to expect

The session runs from 1pm to 3pm and is free to attend, though booking in advance is essential. Activities include inclusive cycling, sensory play, arts and crafts, and drumming - a mix that keeps different ages and abilities moving at their own pace. Causeway Coast and Glens runs this type of event as part of its wider summer recreation programme, so the staff and volunteers on the day are familiar with supporting families who need a bit more space or time. Megaw Park has public toilets including accessible facilities on site. The park is being developed to include Changing Places accommodation, so it is one of the better-equipped venues in the area for families with complex needs.

Getting there

Ballymoney sits on the A26 between Ballymena and Coleraine, roughly 17 miles north-east of Ballymena and an easy drive from most of the Causeway Coast. From Belfast, the A26 via Ballymena is the straightforward route - allow around an hour. Translink operates bus services into Ballymoney from Belfast, Coleraine, and surrounding towns; the Bus Éireann cross-border network does not reach this far north, so visitors from the Republic will find driving the more practical option. Megaw Park is in the town centre and has a car park with dedicated accessible bays.

While you’re in Ballymoney

Ballymoney is a quiet market town with a good high street for a short wander and the Leslie Hill Open Farm a few miles outside the town for families who want to extend the day. There is more to see in Ballymoney and across Co. Antrim.
