At Enniskillen Castle · Enniskillen Castle, Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh
This is a five-day summer programme for children aged 8 to 12, run by the staff of Enniskillen Castle in partnership with outdoor activity specialists Blue Green Yonder. It pairs indoor museum sessions with outdoor adventures on Lough Erne, so children are not just reading about Fermanagh’s past - they are paddling across the lough in Viking style and practising archery in the manner of medieval hunters and armies. It suits families looking for something more structured than a one-off visit: the week builds from one historical era to the next, giving children a proper arc of discovery rather than a grab-bag of facts.
Each day runs from 9:30am to around 3:00pm. Morning sessions take place inside the castle with museum staff guiding children through the layers of Fermanagh’s history - from the earliest settlers of the Stone Age through the powerful Medieval Maguires, the arrival of the Vikings, the Fermanagh Hearth tradition, and the county’s role in the Second World War. The emphasis throughout is hands-on: handling replica artefacts, asking questions, piecing together a story.
Afternoons move outdoors. Blue Green Yonder lead the water and land activities, which include paddling across Lough Erne using Viking techniques and trying archery. Lunch is supervised at the Broadmeadow area; children bring their own packed lunch. The programme is capped at limited numbers, so the group stays small enough for genuine engagement with staff. Booking ahead is essential - places tend to sell out well before August.
Enniskillen sits at the centre of Co. Fermanagh, roughly equidistant between Belfast (about 90 minutes on the A4) and Dublin (about two hours on the N3/A4 via Cavan). The town is also served by Bus Eireann and Translink Ulsterbus routes from both cities. The castle sits right on the edge of the town centre, on the banks of the River Erne where it flows between the Upper and Lower Loughs. Town centre car parks are a short walk; some street parking is also available nearby.
The castle grounds themselves are worth time before or after a session - the view across the water is one of the better ones in the north-west. The town has good independent cafes and the Buttermarket craft and design centre is nearby for browsing. There is more to see in Enniskillen and across Co. Fermanagh.
