Fermentation with Farm Ferments: Indie Fude Masterclass

At Indie Fude (Ormeau) · 232 Ormeau Road, Belfast, Co. Antrim, BT7 2FZ

Jars of fermented vegetables and sauerkraut laid out for a workshop

What to Expect

Gayle from Farm Ferments leads this three-hour, hands-on fermentation masterclass at Indie Fude’s Ormeau Road shop in Belfast. The session covers the basics of home fermentation, starting with traditional sauerkraut, which every participant makes from scratch and takes home in a jar, before moving on to techniques for kimchi, other fermented vegetables and ginger beer. Fermentation has become one of the more popular strands of Indie Fude’s food programme over the past couple of years, reflecting wider interest in gut health and preserving seasonal vegetables at home, and this class is pitched as an accessible entry point into that world rather than a specialist course. Alongside the practical work, the class includes a curated pairing of Irish artisan cheeses with a selection of ferments, with tastings offered throughout the afternoon so participants can taste finished examples of the styles they are learning to make. It is aimed at complete beginners as much as anyone with some kitchen experience, with the focus on giving people the confidence and method to keep fermenting at home afterwards rather than a one-off demonstration. Indie Fude runs masterclasses like this regularly across the year at its Ormeau and Comber locations, usually built around a visiting producer or a particular technique, so this fermentation session is one instalment in a wider rolling programme of cookery and tasting classes.
