At Glenariff GAC · Glenariff, Co. Antrim
Senior club hurling in the Glens of Antrim is among the most compelling GAA football you will find anywhere on the island, and this Group 2 fixture between Glenariff Oisín and St Enda’s delivers exactly that. Both clubs are chasing qualification from a tight group that also contains Cushendall and Dunloy - four clubs with genuine pedigree and nothing to spare between them. If you have never watched a county championship match in the Glens, this is a fine place to start.
Glenariff Oisín CLG, founded in 1904 and based in Waterfoot, are the home side. The club won its first Antrim Senior Hurling Championship in 1935 and has remained a fixture in the top tier of the county game ever since. Their ground - named to honour Charlie McAllister and Pat McVeigh, two local men killed by Crown forces in 1922 - sits in one of the most scenic settings in Ulster hurling.
St Enda’s travel from Glengormley, north Belfast. Founded in 1956, they have grown into the biggest GAA club in Ulster and carry strong senior hurling ambitions. The Antrim Senior Hurling Championship, sponsored by Bathshack, runs on a group-and-knockout format, and a win here could be decisive for both sides. Expect a physical, fast-paced contest with the stakes visible in every tackle.
Glenariff is in the Glens of Antrim, reached via the A43 from Ballymena - roughly 45 minutes - or along the spectacular Antrim Coast Road (A2) through Cushendall and into Waterfoot. The coastal route adds time but is well worth it on a clear August day. There is no regular direct bus service to Glenariff, so a car is the practical option for most visitors. Parking at GAA grounds in the Glens tends to be informal - roadside and nearby fields - so allow a few extra minutes.
The Glenariff Glen itself is one of the finest of the nine Glens of Antrim, with walking trails along the river gorge that are easy to combine with a match day trip. The coast road between Waterfoot and Cushendall is a short drive with good options for food and a pint after the match. There is more to see in Antrim and across Co. Antrim.
