Andersonstown SC Antrim Intermediate Hurling Championship 2026 - Group Stage

At Various venues, Co. Antrim · Co. Antrim

Antrim Intermediate Hurling Championship 2026

Club hurling at its most competitive - the Antrim Intermediate Hurling Championship is the second tier of hurling in the county, and it has a way of producing some of the most absorbing games of the summer. Eight clubs are split into two groups for the 2026 edition, sponsored by Andersonstown SC, with the stakes high at every stage: winners earn promotion to the Senior Championship, while those who stumble out the other end face the drop. This is where ambition and pride collide, and the atmosphere at club grounds across Co. Antrim reflects exactly that.

What to expect

Group 1 lines out Loughgiel Shamrocks, St Johns, Rossa, and Ballycastle. Group 2 brings together Cushendall, Dunloy, Glenariff Oisín, and St Endas. The competition runs from August through to September, with finals typically decided before the end of October. Glenariff Oisín won the 2025 title, so they carry the weight of defending intermediate champions into the new season.

The format rewards consistency - each club plays the others in their group, with the top sides advancing to the knockout rounds. The championship has been running since 1937, and over those decades it has shaped generations of hurlers across Antrim. Winning it also opens the door to the Ulster Intermediate Club Hurling Championship, giving clubs a wider stage.

Fixtures are played at club grounds the length and breadth of the county, from the coast to the Glens to the city fringe. The standard is high, the pace fierce, and the crowds are loyal local ones who know every player on the field.

Getting there

Fixtures take place at various club grounds across Co. Antrim rather than a single venue, so the specific location changes each round. The county is well served by road: the M2 motorway runs north from Belfast to Antrim town and beyond, and the A26 connects the north Antrim coast. For travel between towns, Translink operates bus services linking Belfast with Ballymena, Cushendall, Ballycastle, and other areas where clubs are based. Check the specific fixture and venue on antrim.gaa.ie before you travel, as grounds vary. Parking at GAA club grounds is generally on-site or along the road beside the ground.

While you’re in Antrim

A day out for a hurling match at a club ground gives you a real sense of how GAA life works at community level in the North - and the surrounding countryside, from the Glens of Antrim to the north coast, is worth the journey in itself. There is more to see in Antrim and across Co. Antrim.
