Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of) - Grand Opera House Belfast

At Grand Opera House · Great Victoria Street, Belfast, Co. Antrim

Grand Opera House Belfast

What to Expect

Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of) is a bold, irreverent retelling of Jane Austen’s novel, seen from the point of view of the household maids rather than the Bennet sisters. Five performers play every character between them, mixing pop music classics into the story of romance and matchmaking in Regency England. The production won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Comedy and the Evening Standard Award in the West End, and the Grand Opera House describes it as affectionate to Austen even as it sends her up. It plays Belfast from 20 to 24 October 2026.

The show’s premise, flipping the familiar Austen story to the servants who usually stay silent in the background, gives it a comic energy closer to a sketch show than a conventional costume drama, helped along by the anachronistic pop soundtrack woven through the period setting. Five performers switching rapidly between all the named roles, including the Bennet sisters, Mr Darcy and Mr Collins, keeps the pace brisk across a shorter running time than a straight adaptation would need. Its West End and Olivier Award pedigree has made it a popular touring draw for audiences who know the novel well enough to enjoy seeing it upended, as much as for newcomers.
