Athlone Castle is a 13th-century Norman stronghold strategically positioned on the River Shannon at the heart of Ireland. The museum explores the castle’s military history, its role in Irish conflicts, and the broader story of Athlone’s development. Visitors ascend the tower for panoramic views of the Shannon and surrounding countryside. Guided tours explain the castle’s architecture and historical significance.
Open daily 10:00am - 5:30pm (June through September). Admission €8. Guided tours available; check website for times and group bookings. The castle is fully accessible at ground level; the tower has narrow staircases. Riverside location with car parking nearby.
Athlone Castle is in the town centre, accessible on foot from Athlone railway station (30 mins walk) or by bus. Paid parking available on Castle Street and nearby.
