What to Expect

Ballybofey Farmers Market is held every Friday from noon to 4pm in the grounds of the local GAA club, one of the twin towns’ main community sports facilities. Stalls are run by local growers, bakers and food producers from the Finn Valley area, selling fresh produce, home baking and other locally made goods. Ballybofey and its twin town Stranorlar sit either side of the River Finn in central Donegal, and the Friday market is one of the regular fixtures that brings people from both sides of the bridge into the same place during the working week, alongside the area’s other big weekly draw, the livestock mart in Stranorlar. Because the market runs into the afternoon rather than just a morning slot, it tends to suit shoppers doing a weekly food shop on the way home from work as much as it does a leisurely browse.

Getting There

Ballybofey sits on the N15, roughly midway between Letterkenny and Donegal Town, and is well served by Bus Éireann’s Donegal routes running along that road. The GAA Grounds are on the edge of the town centre with parking available on site, making it an easy stop for anyone already passing through on the N15. Ballybofey’s twin town Stranorlar, just across the river, is also home to the area’s livestock mart, so between the two towns a Friday and Monday visitor could catch both the produce market and a working cattle sale within the same few days.

Ballybofey is one of several Friday farmers markets running across the county on the same afternoon, alongside Rossnowlagh further south, so shoppers travelling between the two have the option of catching both on the same day if timing allows.
