The Beekeeper of Aleppo at the Gaiety Theatre

Adapted from Christy Lefteri’s bestselling novel, The Beekeeper of Aleppo tells the story of Nuri, a beekeeper, and his wife Afra, an artist, as they flee the devastating conflict in Syria and make the dangerous journey to Britain. What to Expect

This is a story about what happens when everything you know is destroyed and you have to rebuild from nothing. Nuri’s bees and Afra’s paintings are both casualties of the war, and the loss of those defining parts of their identity runs through the entire narrative. Their journey across Europe is harrowing but also filled with moments of unexpected kindness and beauty.

On stage, the production brings the novel’s poetic quality to life. The relationship between Nuri and Afra is at the centre of everything - how trauma changes people, how grief can push two people apart even as they cling to each other, and how hope survives in the most unlikely circumstances.

The run goes from April 28 to May 2 at the Gaiety. It’s the kind of theatre that reminds you why the art form matters.

The Gaiety is on South King Street, just off Grafton Street. Luas Green Line to St. Stephen’s Green is three minutes. Tara Street and Pearse DART are 10 minutes.
