What to Expect

Led by Dr Jane O’Brien, the Dark History Tour takes a different route through Ennis’s medieval past, focusing on grime, crime and grim punishments. The tour covers the story of the Mad Monk and his notorious graveyard excavations, the tale of Biddy Early - the famous 19th-century Clare herbalist and wise woman accused of witchcraft - and other dark episodes from the town’s history, told against the backdrop of Ennis’s ancient lanes and medieval buildings. Duration is approximately 70 minutes.

Ennis is served by Bus Eireann from Limerick, Galway and Shannon. Meeting point is central, within walking distance of all town-centre car parks.
