What to Expect

Scattery Island (Inis Cathaigh) in the Shannon Estuary holds one of Ireland’s most intact early Christian monastic sites, founded by Saint Senan in the 5th century. The island features a 120-foot round tower, the cathedral, six medieval churches, a lighthouse, an artillery battery and a restored village where the island’s river pilots once lived. Guided tours are provided by OPW heritage guides once visitors land. The ferry crossing from Kilrush Marina takes approximately 30 minutes and runs throughout the summer season.

Kilrush Marina is signposted from the town centre of Kilrush, approx. 40km south-west of Ennis on the N68. Parking at the marina.
